| 25 kg and 26,8 kg ... boat stalking, specimen stalking ??? |
 |
by Mickaël LE POURSOT
I am going to answer now to this question : if the angler is lucky and if there are very big carps on the lake, I say Yes with no hesitation…the best exemples are my two last sessions on a wild gravel pit near Paris (August and at the end of October/beginning of November) : 25 kg and 26,8 kg mirror carps catched with a little waggler…

| The approach : |
 |
Stalking in a boat on a lake must not be improvised… a minimum of organization and tactics in the approach is needed …
First, the approach…
Like stalking of the edge, it is necessary to locate obstacles in which the carps stand regularly, and they leave (even only of 30 cm…) in order to eat. Or to locate regular spots where carps are feeding, and where we are able to see them eating: either by observing them directly, or by visualizing their feeding by bubbles...
Once we located the regular places of feeding or parking, it will then be necessary to quickly put fishes in confidence on our baits. In the case of a short session of a few hours, it is necessary that the fishes eat the baits immediately… I bait with pellets 4 to 9 mm and sweet corn. I add sometimes a little hemp seeds. But be carefull. Do not put too much hemp on your mix of baits… it makes the carps become “crazy” and they then spend their time to roll itself on the baits, and it becomes very difficult, even impossible, to correctly hook them by the mouth while fishing with little float… there will be many false runs and many fish then which harpoon themselves, rolling themselves on the line. |

The material :
The material must be without fault… because of the violence of the fighs the material we use must be very resisting (under penalty of seeing the rod “exploding in flight”…). But the rod must be parabolic too and flexible enough to box the rushes and blow of heads of fish without taking down them…
The Tribal Lite (that I have chance to test for one year) is for me the best rod for "Stalking". Powerful it attaches any fish. Parabolic, relatively “flexible”, it avoids the too many unhookings we have with the majority of rods. Light, it allows a waiting and fights very pleasant. The flexible scion makes possible to cast small wagglers (3-5 G) to about 15 meters even with braid in 30 or 40/100…. Happiness, just happiness!!! The one I use for one year is a 10’- 2,75 lbs Tribal Lite…it allows to catch with stalking wild carps up to 15 kg just in front of obstacles, and even wild common carps which are real torpedo… (see video below this article).
I use a Stradic 5000 reel. Its fluidity, its robustness and its brake make it possible to use it whatever the conditions are.
According the populations of carps of the gravel pits I spoke before about, I must use 40/100 Braid (Rapala Titanium Braid)…the wild commom carps up to 15 kg are able to pulverize (break) 30/100 braid… Ofcourse, in waters where population of carps is composed by carps less than 15 kg, I use 30/100 braid (Shimano Antares Braid).

| How to position the boat : |
 |
| First it is necessary to approach the spot in a very discrete way …if you see a fish wich are eating, you must position the boat … a small diagram is better than a long speech. |
|
|
| The action of angling : |
 |
When the boat is in place, I put discreetly baits again with a sling . Using this accessory is a obligation, because, even if it is possible to cast with hand baits to this distance, we lack of discretion. We must stand up on the boat, the boat moves because of the cast with hand…and we are sure to afraid the carps .
When the carp(s) are eating with confidence on the spot, I cast with discretion the waggler (that’s why it is necessary to use a little waggler…). If we made noise by positionning the boat, it can take half an hour for that the carps come and eat again with confidence… I cast my line only when I am sure that carps are eating with confidence. When it is the case, the run can appear very quickly. That takes often less than 5 minutes !!! It even sometimes happened to me to take a wild carp during the descent of the hook, when the line was set up… as it is the case in match angling when the roach are full feeding on baiting and starting!!! Very impressive, specially when you know that this run happened during a 8 days session of carp fishing when we had only one run at two anglers with classic methods of carp fishing !!! |

 |
Stalking is an extraordinary way to fish carps… to practise it from a boat still opens additional horizon to us!!!
Definitely to try it, and to try with Tribal Lite…
