Human Rights Policy

Shimano Group Human Rights Policy

This human rights policy is based on our “Code of Conduct”, which states that we make efforts to act with sincerity and fairness, in compliance with applicable laws and regulations in each country and region of the world.

To accomplish our mission statement, “To promote health and happiness through the enjoyment of nature and the world around us”, Shimano Group* will contribute to sustainable economic growth and the resolution of environmental and social issues based on universal ethical values and law-abiding spirit common to the world as a corporate citizen in the global society and will continue to be a “Value-Creating Company” which provides ”Captivating Products” loved by people around the world.

We recognise that respect for human rights is essential to being a “Value Creating Company” and have established the following Shimano Group Human Rights Policy (this “policy”).

1. Scope of application

This policy applies to all directors, officers and employees of Shimano Group. We also request all business partners associated with all Shimano Group products and services to understand, agree to and implement this policy.

2. Commitment to respecting human rights

We are committed to respecting the International Bill of Human Rights, and the ILO Declaration on Fundamental Principles and Rights at Work and fundamental conventions in our own operations and in our value chain, and to addressing human rights issues with a sense of ownership in accordance with the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights (the “UNGP”).

In particular, given the large number of workers involved in our business, including in the manufacture of our products, we will never accept forced or child labour and any discrimination, inter alia, based on gender or race, as stated in our Code of Conduct, and will strive to create a fair and lively workplace where workers can work with dignity.

Where national and regional laws and regulations differ from internationally recognised human rights principles, we will comply with the higher standard, and where faced with conflicting requirements, we will seek ways to honour the principles of internationally recognised human rights to the greatest extent possible.

3. Human rights due diligence

We will continuously conduct human rights due diligence, in line with the UNGP, a process undertaken to identify, prevent and mitigate potential adverse human rights impact.

4. Remediation

Where we identify that we have caused or contributed to adverse human rights impact, we will work to remedy it through appropriate means, such as by consulting with the affected stakeholders themselves.

In the event that our business partners have caused or contributed to adverse human rights impact that is directly linked to our operations, products or services, we will use our leverage to remedy it.

We will establish or participate in an effective operational-level grievance mechanism, in line with the UNGP, so that stakeholders can bring up grievances to be addressed as soon as possible, ideally before they become severe and thus preventing escalation.

5. Understanding and application

We will undertake to provide appropriate capacity building, mentoring and training activities on this policy for Shimano Group’s directors, officers and employees. We will work to gain a full understanding of this policy from our business partners.

6. Dialogue and consultation with internal and external stakeholders and experts

We are committed to, at all stages of the due diligence process, holding meaningful dialogue and consulting with both internal and external stakeholders and experts in relation to human rights due diligence and other initiatives undertaken under this policy. We will strive to create a trusting and secure environment for such dialogue and consultations to be held and to prevent any risk of retaliation.

7. Progress checks and information disclosure

We will continuously monitor compliance with this policy as well as the efficiency and effectiveness of our human rights due diligence efforts and make continuous improvements.

We will report on our efforts and results to respect human rights in accordance with this policy through our official website and other communication channels with a view to being accountable and transparent to stakeholders.
