In 1981, AEROCAST was released as tackle for surf casting by applying the aerodynamic concept and technologies refined in the bicycle components business. In the development process, wind tunnel tests were conducted to maximize the aerodynamic characteristics. New designs and technologies were introduced to focus on the long casting performance. For example, an oval cross section was used for the rod. AEROCAST reel and rod set a new national record in the All Japan Casting Competition in the same year. They also produced good results in competitions in various parts of Japan, demonstrating their performance and effectiveness. Shimano continues to pursue long casting performance for surf casting based on the AERO concept.
