Snowboard Gear Further Improved from the Step-in System

Snowboarding gear was one of the new businesses on which Shimano embarked following the bicycle components and fishing tackle businesses. In 1995, Shimano marketed Clicker, a binding system jointly developed with a U.S. manufacturer. Clicker consisted of step-in boots and a binding system that enabled snowboarders to fix their boots without using buckles. It was inspired by Shimano’s SPD system. Subsequently, Shimano marketed standard type products one after another, including the HB series in 1998, Rapidfire, a step-in binding system with three cleats, in 2002, and TRIPPER, genuine leather boots, in 2004. In 2005, Shimano released ACCUBLADE, which was different from the conventional step-in binding system. ACCUBLADE was highly acclaimed for its comfortable and smooth step-in performance, riding performance, and light weight. In 2007, it won the Good Design Award and created a sensation. However, Shimano judged that it was difficult to continue the business due to the decrease in the number of amateur snowboarders. It transferred the business to a different company and withdrew from the snowboard gear business in 2009. Although Shimano could not establish a new business, this was a feat in terms of taking on a challenge in a new field.
