Shimano is committed to reducing environmental impact through effective resource utilization, as well as the promotion of reuse and recycling. For example, the company is implementing cross-divisional initiatives, such as incorporating recycled materials derived from plastic waste generated during bicycle component manufacturing into certain fishing tackle
products.
In addition, Shimano selects materials based on product applications and required performance, thereby advancing sustainable manufacturing practices.
Recently, Shimano has adopted “KANEKA Biodegradable Polymer ‘Green Planet™’ ,” developed by Kaneka Corporation, in selected lure products. Green Planet™ is 100% biomass-based and biodegradable in marine environments.
Conventional lures are typically designed using materials such as ABS resin, elastomers, and PVC derived from fossil fuels to ensure operability and durability. Therefore, careful verification is required when introducing new materials. For these lures incorporating Green Planet™, extensive testing and adjustments were carried out to meet required performance standards, confirming that they achieve operability and durability equivalent to conventional products.
Moving forward, Shimano will continue to pursue manufacturing that balances environmental considerations with enhanced product value, and contribute to the realization of a sustainable society.
