2022/3/8Reduction of CO2 emissions in the heat treatment process

Environment

Under the Shimano Tricolor Project Policy, we have been conducting activities to reduce our impact on the global environment, which is where outdoor sports are enjoyed.
This article features efforts at the Sakai Intelligent Plant, Shimonoseki Factory, and some factories outside Japan.

Introduction of an electric heating vacuum carburizing furnace

At the Sakai Intelligent Plant, active capital investment started in 2012 to introduce an electric heating vacuum carburizing furnace, which is used for the heat treatment process of steel materials. Compared to a conventional gas carburizing furnace, the production efficiency has been improved by about 1.6 times and CO2 emissions have been reduced to about one third. The equipment has been introduced at the Shimonoseki Factory and Shimano Singapore, which is the headquarters of companies operating in Asia. A project is underway to deploy the equipment to other factories.
In 2021, electricity derived from renewable energy was introduced at the Sakai Intelligent Plant and Shimonoseki Factory, which operate in Japan. Electricity derived from renewable energy accounts for 99% of electricity consumption for business operations.
This has made it possible to significantly reduce the CO2 emissions in the heat treatment process, whose energy consumption is high, at the two factories in Japan.

We remain committed to reducing our environmental impact so that we can contribute to preserving a beautiful global environment.

We publish an ESG Sheet once a year which lists the main results and details of our activities related to ESG. The ESG Sheet is available for your reference.
